OCTOBER 9, 2015: California Governor Jerry Brown signed a trio of medical marijuana bills–AB 266, AB 243, and SB 643, collectively known as the Medical Marijuana Regulation and Safety Act (MMRSA)–into law this afternoon, ushering in a new regulatory structure for the state’s medical marijuana industry.
The bills were passed on the final night of the legislative session, after several amendments in both houses of the state legislature. This comes nearly two decades after Californians voted to legalize marijuana for medical use in 1996. The bills were supported by unlikely allies from both sides of the aisle, indicating the importance of passing workable regulations for the medical cannabis industry before a full legalization measure is put before the voters in 2016.
